    What is the Chain of Survival?

    The Chain of Survival is an emergency response model that guides bystanders, first responders, and healthcare professionals through a sudden cardiac emergency. For out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), the first three links depend almost entirely on everyday people—bystanders, coworkers, and family members.

    Breakdown of the 6 Links in the Chain of Survival

    1. Early Recognition and Activation of Emergency Response

    You cannot treat what you do not recognize. The very first step is identifying early signs of cardiac arrest: the person suddenly collapses, is unresponsive, and is not breathing normally (or is only gasping).

    • Key Action: Call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately. Put your phone on speaker mode so emergency dispatchers can guide you through resuscitation steps while you stay with the victim.

    2. Early High-Quality CPR (Chest Compressions)

    Immediate chest compressions act as a manual pump, keeping oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and vital organs until advanced care arrives.

    • Key Action: Place your hands in the center of the chest and perform Hands-Only CPR. Push hard and fast at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute (to the tempo of the song "Stayin' Alive"). Bystander CPR can double or triple a person's chances of survival.  To practice proper chest compression depth and tempo, instructors and training centers rely on CPR training manikins with real-time feedback to ensure students build accurate muscle memory.

    3. Rapid Defibrillation (AED Usage)

    Most sudden cardiac arrests are caused by ventricular fibrillation—a chaotic heart rhythm. While CPR circulates blood, only an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can shock the heart back into a normal rhythm.

    • Key Action: Fetch and power on the nearest AED immediately. Follow the step-by-step voice and visual prompts. AEDs automatically analyze heart rhythms and will only deliver a shock if medically necessary, making them completely safe for non-medical users.  Hands-on practice using AED training devices and replacement pads allows students to become familiar with voice prompts and pad placement without delivering actual electrical shocks.

    4. Advanced Resuscitation (EMS Care)

    Once Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedics arrive on the scene, professional resuscitation begins.

    • Key Action: Paramedics administer advanced airway management, intravenous emergency medications, and continuous physiological monitoring while transporting the patient to an acute care facility.

    5. Post-Cardiac Arrest Care

    Surviving the initial arrest is only part of the battle. Specialized hospital care is required to stabilize the patient and minimize long-term organ damage.

    • Key Action: Intensive Care Unit (ICU) medical teams stabilize blood pressure, manage body temperature to protect brain function (targeted temperature management), and treat the underlying cause of the arrest.

    6. Long-Term Recovery and Rehabilitation

    The final link focuses on holistic physical and psychological healing after leaving the hospital.

    • Key Action: Comprehensive care includes neurocognitive evaluations, physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, lifestyle adjustments, and emotional support for both survivors and family caregivers coping with trauma.
